Wine only supports x86 architectures. Technically speaking it’s a compatibility layer, not an emulator. PS3 is PowerPC-based which is an incompatible architecture, so no Wine.
Now, it may be possible one day to combine Wine with the QEMU CPU emulation to run Windows games and apps on a PS3 with Linux (as was previously done with Darwine on the old PowerPC-based Macs), but I haven’t seen this done yet on the PS3…

The PS3 Slim has NO capability to run another OS on it. Since Sony loses money on units and there were so many people using PS3s for Linux Cell clusters (and therefore not buying any games/accessories), Sony decided to remove the option in the PS3 Slim. If it had only been casual users using the option, they may have kept it.

well I forgot to mention it mine is a PS3 Slim and I’ve seen many comments that PS3 slim has no capability to run linux.. so I guess I’m screwed huh??

Yeah, this is exactly what I would do. I think I’ve heard of some people running some version of Mame on their psubuntu, but I would definitely check that out first.

There’s a version of MAME (SDLMAME) that runs natively in PS3 Linux (as well as other emulators like SDLMESS, XE, snes9x-gtk, mednafen, etc.) w/o having to add another layer of emulation. They would likely be so slow as to be unusable if actually run within an emulation of DOS/Windows.

question for anyone:
I would like to run MAME on my PS3… but I’ve seen some videos on how to install windows and mas os.. so far it looks slow… so the question is: Can I install windows or MAC OS, and install MAME and run it with no problem?? or is there anyway to run MAME under PS3 environment???
THANKS!?

But my point is, if I’m dumb and I want to change the gnome logos to apple logos, then I should have every open source freedom to do so.
Look at the history of GNU/Linux. This OS is pretty much a knockoff of UNIX. (GNU=Gnu is Not Unix). They saw the good and bad traits of Unix and created their own “open” version of Unix dubbed “Linux.”
Theres my point in case. I ABSOLUTELY agree with you; you got to appreciate it the way it is. It’s not OS X or Windows. Remember, I was a newbie back then

Back when I posted this video a year ago, I was still slobbering over the Leopard eye candy
But after using Linux for about 2 years now, I have been doing exactly what you have recommended here: appreciating Linux the way it is. My current desktop environment is tweaked, sure, it uses global menu and the dock bar out of practicality, but it doesn’t look anything like OS X or Windows, it’s just a clean dark, ubuntu theme.
March 2nd, 2010 at 8:32 PM
Ubuntu 7.7?? Where you got the theme – mac4lin for Ubuntu 7.7, or you have ubuntu with integrated theme. Post a link please where I can download And how to install theme on it.
March 2nd, 2010 at 8:44 PM
What the version of Ubuntu Linux he used there?
Where can I download this software? A just know that he used (mac4lin) -theme for his Ubuntu-linux OS.
March 2nd, 2010 at 9:12 PM
Well you can make a Linux distro look similar to OSX but you can’t make it act the same.
As I said- useful features of this imitating like the dock are useful, but making the login screen say OSX and the other folks who change the icon at the top left to an Apple logo etc… that’s just fake eye candy. Appreciate Linux for what it is, not what you want it to be. Just my 2 cents.
March 2nd, 2010 at 9:25 PM
Oh yeah, I absolutely agree.
But you gotta remember, some people feel uneasy when they first see a different Linux desktop environment, because they’re too use to seeing WIndows or Leopard; so I sometimes ease people into using Ubuntu by changing the theme around for them. But you’re missing the point. The whole point to open source, or Linux in this case is customization. You have the freedom to make your Linux machine look or act any way you want to. This is what it is all about.

i can understand using a dock, as it actually does serve a purpose, and a good one at that. but customizing your linux os to look as close to osx as possible? ok… sorry but thats just dumb…
